‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Cast Donates $100,000 Towards Bail Relief For Protesters

The cast of NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has made a $100,000 donation to the National Bail Fund Network.

Dan Goor, co-creator of the show, made the announcement on Twitter to “condemn” the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of Minneapolis police. “The cast and showrunner of ‘Brooklyn 99’ condemn the murder of George Floyd and support the many people who are protesting police brutality nationally. Together we have made a $100,000 donation to The National Bail Fund Network. We encourage you to look up your local bail fund: the National Bail Fund Network is an organization that can lead you to them. #blacklivesmatter.”

Stephanie Beatriz, who stars on the show as Det. Rosa Diaz, made a personal donation to the fund as well. She also urged any actors who portray police officers on television to do the same. “I’m an actor who plays a detective on tv,” she tweeted. “If you currently play a cop? If you make tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in residuals from playing a cop? I’ll let you do the math.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is produced by Universal Television and it also stars Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, and Melissa Fumero. The series was canceled by Fox in 2018, but picked up by NBC shortly thereafter.

Amanda Seales Leaves ‘The Real’ 6 Months After Joining As Co-Host

After six months as a co-host on The Real, Amanda Seales is leaving the show.  The 38-year-old actress announced her departure during an Instagram Live, explaining that she wasn’t able to fully use her ‘voice’ and found the talk show lacking black voices ‘at the top.’

Seales said that her decision to leave had nothing to do with her co-hosts, Loni Love, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jeannie Mai and Adrienne Houghton.  ‘My contract is up at The Real, and I didn’t renew it,’ Amanda simply stated in the Instagram Live with actor Brandon Dixon. ‘It doesn’t feel good to my soul to be at a place where I can not speak to my people the way they need to be spoken to,’ she continued. ‘And where the people that are speaking to me in despairing ways are not being handled.’

Seales had guest hosted several times before officially joining the CBS talk show back in January, replacing Tamar Braxton who had been fired in 2016.  Seales holds a master’s degree in African American studies from Columbia University, and is also a series regular as Tiffany on HBO’s hit show Insecure.

Rush Legend Neil Peart To Receive Honor In His Hometown

The late legendary Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart will be honored by his hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario with the renaming of a pavilion after him. The city council agreed to renaming the Port Dalhousie area after Peart, after 81 percent of residents voted for him in an online poll.

The pavilion had previously been unanamed and stands near the location that inspired the song “Lakeside Park” from the iconic band’s 1975 album “Caress Of Steel”. Councilman Bruce Williamson told the St. Catharines Standard, “The public voting on naming is obviously fairly conclusive. Neal Peart’s been one of our most famous local individuals, and a lot of his songs have local roots, including the namesake park.”

Peart died on January 7th at the age of 67 following a battle with brain cancer.

“Riverdale” Star Vanessa Morgan Alleges She is Paid Less Than White Co-Stars

“Riverdale” actress Vanessa Morgan announced she’s “not being quiet anymore” when it comes to the portrayal of black people in media. Morgan tweeted:  “Tired of how black people are portrayed in Media. Tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people. Tired of us also being used as side kick non dimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show. It starts with the media.”

Morgan also stated that she gets paid less than her white co-stars and that she is “used as the token biracial bisexual.” Morgan asked fans not to “attack” her fellow castmates, as they “don’t call the shots,” her co-star Lili Reinhart responded with, “We love you, V. And support you 10000%.”

Morgan, who plays Toni Topaz, joined “Riverdale” as a reoccurring character in the show’s second season and was promoted to a series regular in season 3. She is currently the only black series regular, since Ashleigh Murray left the show after the third season.

Lea Michele Apologizes For Being Difficult On Set Of “Glee” After Accusations Against Her Were Made

Former “Glee” star Lea Michele has apologized for being “unnecessarily difficult” on the set of her show, after a co-star accused Michele of making her time there “a living hell.”  Michele issued a statement saying that while she didn’t recall any incident or judged anyone by their background, she was sorry and blamed her privilege and “immaturity.”

Michele said: “I clearly acted in ways which hurt other people. Whether it was my privileged position and perspective that caused me to be perceived as insensitive or inappropriate at times or whether it was just my immaturity and me just being unnecessarily difficult, I apologize for my behavior and for any pain which I have caused.”

The apology came two days after former co-star Samantha Marie Ware accused Michele of “traumatic microaggressions that made me question a career in Hollywood.” Michele is white and Ware is black. After Ware’s allegation, the meal kit company HelloFresh announced that it would sever its partnership with Michele, saying “We are disheartened and disappointed to learn of the recent claims concerning Lea Michele.”

Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic Deactivates His Twitter Account After Backlash From His Pro-Trump Social Media Post

Krist Novoselic, former founding member and bassist of Nirvana, has deactivated his Twitter account following backlash for a social media post praising Donald Trump. Novoselic’s comments were made in response to a speech Trump gave June 1 about law and order.

Novoselic wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post. “Wow!!! I know many of you can’t stand him, however, Trump knocked it out of the park with this speech. Social media and television are looping images of societal breakdown,” he continued. “I agree, the president should not be sending troops into states – and he legally might not be able to anyway – nevertheless, his tone in this speech is strong and direct. I have been watching the images in the media and thinking about how polarized our country is.”

However, many on Twitter angrily criticized Novoselic’s post, and he deleted his Twitter; however he returned to his Facebook to follow-up with his prior, deleted comments.

“To clarify a few things: As an avowed independent, I don’t endorse a major party or candidate. And it feels insane to have to say this , but I don’t support fascism, and I don’t support an authoritarian state. I believe in a civilized society and that we all have to work toward that. Love and thanks to anyone who cares to read this.”

Hollywood Studios And Entertainment Leaders Release Guidelines For Resuming Production Amid Covid-19 Shutdown

Hollywood is making moves towards getting back to work, with the entertainment industry’s guilds and unions signing off on a 22-page guideline document designed to establish safety protocols for producing movies and TV.

The agreement (which can be viewed here) comes after negotiations among actors, directors and crews, and will include extensive testing, temperature checks, cleaning measures and physical distancing when possible. The parties also acknowledge that revisions might be necessary going forward. Actors and other performers, the report notes, are “most vulnerable because they cannot wear PPE [personal protective equipment] when cameras are rolling, and frequently will not be able to engage in physical distancing.” That will require greater testing frequency for them and those with whom they are in close contact.

Certain activities, such as writing and casting, are still encouraged to be conducted virtually whenever possible.  Other parts of production, such as live studio audiences, are also being discouraged.

The plan was produced by the Industry-Wide Labor Management Safety Committee Task Force, which was formed specifically for that purpose, with input from epidemiologists and sanitation experts. The guidelines have been submitted to public-health officials in New York and California.
