2022 Billboard Music Awards: See the full list of winners

The 2022 Billboard Music Awards were held on Sunday night, hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs live from the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. Drake, who did not attend the event, was the big winner of the evening, taking home the awards for Top Artist and Top Male Artist.

Other big winners included Olivia Rodrigo, who won Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, Top 100 Artist and Top Streaming Songs Artist awards as well as BTS, who took the Top Duo/Group honor, and Taylor Swift, who won Top 200 Billboard 200 Artist.

Mary J. Blige was honored with the Icon Award, after being introduced by Janet Jackson with a video montage which explored Blige’s career.  Said Jackson:  “Mary J. Blige represents truth.”  In accepting her award, Blige called Jackson an icon and inspiration, saying:  “I’m in a dream right now, thank you so much. ” She also thanked friends, family, fans and Billboard for the honor:  “The way the world is now, I think people think icons are born that way. They become a legend overnight, but that is definitely not the case. It takes a lot time, hard work and a lot of surviving trial and error to achieve greatness.”

The Offspring share the video for ‘Behind Your Walls’

The Offspring have shared the animated video for their new single “Behind Your Walls,” directed and animated by Jeb Hardwick, who worked closely with lead singer and songwriter Dexter Holland.

Said Hardwick: “The song evoked a sense of a couple trying to connect through emotional barriers that had been building over timeI wanted to take that prompt and turn it into a dark fairytale, a sort of dystopian take on the classical storytelling structure of writers like the Brothers Grimm. I wanted the video to have an ambiguous dreamlike aesthetic to it, so I was keen to take away some of the sharpness and crispness usually associated with CGI and give a sense of it being somewhere between a moving painting and a 1920s German Expressionist film.”

The Offspring are currently on tour in support of their most recent album, Let the Bad Times Roll.   The band has also confirmed appearances at summer festivals throughout Europe, Japan, and Brazil.

Bono announces his new memoir ‘Surrender’ will be released November 1st

U2 frontman Bono announced the release date for his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, will be Nov. 1st. According to publisher Alfred A. Knopf, the memoir is “the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him.”

The book is named Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story since each chapter is titled after a different U2 song, and Bono has also created 40 original drawings for the project. Bono said in a statement: “When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs. The people, places and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the ‘70s with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress … with a fair amount of fun along the way.”

The book and an an unabridged audio companion on CD will be released on November 1st via Random House Publishing. The book, in both hardcover and audio form, can be pre-ordered here.

The rock world is mourning the loss of The Black Dahlia Murder’s vocalist Trevor Strnad, who died at the age of 41. Tributes to Strnad have been posted on social media from the rock and metal community who are mourning the loss of Strnad.

Strnad was one of the founding members of The Black Dahlia Murder when they officially formed in 2001, and had been the only constant member still remaining. The band released a total of nine studio albums, with the most recent being 2020’s Verminous.  The Black Dahlia Murder wrote in an official statement on social media: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Trevor Scott Strnad. Beloved son, brother, and Shepard of good times, he was loved by all that met him. A walking encyclopedia of all things music. He was a hugger, a writer, and truly one of the world’s greatest entertainers. His lyrics provided the world with stories and spells and horror and whimsy. It was his life to be your show.”   A cause of death has not yet been revealed, but the end of the statement included the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-8255.

The Black Dahlia Murder’s Brandon Ellis wrote in a post on his Instagram: “I can not even begin to process this… In total shock and disbelief. It has been my greatest honor to spend the last six and a half years in a band with this absolute icon and legend. A brother. A best friend. One of the funniest and most entertaining people to walk the earth. This man changed my life and believed in me more than I do myself. I can not believe there will no more laughs had, songs written together, or stages decimated with Trevor at the helm. I hope he knew how much he was loved the world over.”

Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta wrote: “RIP Trevor Strnad, you’ll be missed dearly, my deepest condolences to TBDM, his family, friends and fans. Thanks for all the laughs, the stories, the music and so much more.”  Others in the rock community also posted tributes to Strnad on social media, including Daniel Winter-Bates of Bury Tomorrow, Alex Skolnick of Testament, Gary Holt of Exodus, and many more.
