Annette Bening to star in the new series ‘Apples Never Fall’ at Peacock

Annette Bening has signed on to star in the upcoming Peacock limited series “Apples Never Fall,” based on the Liane Moriarty novel of the same name.

A synopsis reads that the series: “centers on the Delaneys, who from the outside appear to be an enviably contented family. Former tennis coaches Joy (Bening) and Stan are parents to four adult children. After decades of marriage, they have finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. But after Joy disappears, her children are forced to re-examine their parents’ marriage and their family history with fresh eyes.”

The role will mark one of the few TV roles Bening has had on a series; she is primarily known for her film roles, having earned four Academy Award nominations to date for her work in “The Grifters,” “American Beauty,” “Being Julia,” and “The Kids Are Alright.” She is also a nine-time Golden Globe nominee, winning for “Being Julia” and “The Kids Are Alright.”

Syndicated talk show ‘Dr. Phil’ ending after 21 seasons

The syndicated talk series ‘Dr. Phil’, hosted by Dr. Phil McGraw, is ending after 21 seasons.  The program, launched in September 2002, was co-created by McGraw and Oprah Winfrey. The 72-year-old McGraw said in a statement. “With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children. This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, but while I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I wish to do.”

McGraw began his television career on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ in the 1990s before launching his own series. Dr. Phil His started its run in second place in ratings (only behind Winfrey’s show at the time) and has remained among the top two most-watched shows in daytime television throughout the 21 seasons.

Dr. Phil will air new episodes until the current season ends this spring, and the show’s distributor, CBS Media Ventures, will also keep reruns on the air for the 2023-2024 season. CBS Media Ventures president Steve LoCascio said in a statement: “Phil is a valued partner and member of the CBS/King World family, and while his show may be ending after 21 years, I’m happy to say our relationship is not. Phil changed the daytime landscape as the force behind one of the most popular talk shows ever on daytime TV. We plan to be in the ‘Dr. Phil’ business with the library for years to come and welcome opportunities to work together in the future.”

I’m so grateful for [booking agent] Tim Borror and the Sound Talent Crew; and Leslie, Joe, and everyone at The Rave/Eagles for helping us put this event together. Milwaukee Metal Fest is back! See you in Wisconsin this May!”

Heart, Nirvana earn Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards

Heart sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson and Nirvana received lifetime achievement awards at the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards, taking place at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles. The rock legends joined other honorees including the Supremes, Chic’s Nile Rodgers and rapper Slick Rick.

Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear attended the ceremony; bassist Novoselic lead the acceptance speech, quoting a lyric from Nirvana’s 1993 In Utero song “Serve the Servants.”  He saids: “they said that Kurt [Cobain] was witty or maybe he was a smartass … And he said, ‘Teenage angst has paid off well.’ It has.  I do fan mail, old-fashioned fan mail, and I get letters from around the world, like Nirvana fans, just all around the world. A lot of young people. There’s a new generation of Nirvana fans, and I’m just very grateful for that.”

Ann Wilson did not attend the ceremony, however, Nancy Wilson did attend and share thoughts on a career that’s spanned nearly five decades: “In 1974, I followed my calling, which pulled me out of my college dorm room to capture this dream I had with my sister since we were little kids. The dream was to be the Beatles. We followed our muse through the decades. We blazed a few trails and broke a few glass ceilings along the way for both men and women. And Recording Academy, thank you forever for this. It’s gonna look super sweet on my grandma’s piano in my home studio.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran gave fans a taste of what projects to expect in the DC Universe after taking over the helm of the film and TV franchise. Gunn and Safran shared plans for a revamped DC Universe, with five new films and five new series constituting much of the first chapter — themed as “Gods and Monsters” — in an eight- to 10-year plan to unify the DCU.

Several projects which were already completed will debut in the next two years under a a banner called ‘DC Elseworlds’ — meaning they won’t be connected to Gunn and Safran’s DCU.  Those projects include Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II (which will be released on Oct. 3, 2025); the upcoming Joker sequel, Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Superman movie, and The Flash with Ezra Miller, which Gunn calls “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.”

Gunn and Safran will launch the revamped DCU with “Superman: Legacy” on July 11, 2025, which is described as ‘Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.’ Also from the DCU will be the Creature Commandos animated series, a ‘Peacemaker spinoff series titled Waller (featuring Viola Davis), a Lanterns series, a The Authority film, a Paradise Lost series (set before the birth of Wonder Woman), and a Batman and Robin-focused film titled The Brave and the Bold.
