CBS renews ‘The Talk’ for its 13th season

CBS has renewed the daytime talk show “The Talk” for a 13th season, it was announced during Monday’s show. All five hosts — Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Natalie Morales and Sheryl Underwood — are slated to return.

The Talk has undergone a huge turnover of co-hosts over the past few years. Underwood is the longest-serving host on the panel, having joined the show in Season 2.  Morales, a long-time NBC News correspondent and anchor, and American Ninja Warrior alum Gbajabiamila joined the show this season after the departures of Carrie Ann Inaba and Elaine Welteroth. Kloots joined the show in early 2021 along with Welteroth, and O’Connell joined the show in July 2021, a few months after Sharon Osbourne was let go following an on-air argument with Underwood and allegations of racist comments from former co-hosts Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini.

Take a listen to Taylor Hawkins on lead vocals for the newly-released Johnny Winter cover

The late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is featured on a new Johnny Winter cover. The rendition is a part of the ‘Brother Johnny’ covers album put together by Winter’s younger brother, Edgar Winter.

The track “Guess I’ll Go Away” features Hawkins on lead vocals, and Edgar said: “I had only just met Taylor, and barely got to know him, but I was so impressed by his sincerity, positive energy, and pure enthusiasm. He had a unique spontaneous style different from anyone I’ve ever worked with before. I can be very opinionated—but as soon as heard what he was doing, I knew it was best to step back, stay out of the way, and let him do his thing. That session was an experience I will never forget. When I tried to open a business discussion, he simply would not hear of it. He said—I don’t want ANYTHING for doing this, I just want’a get out there and Rock. And Rock HE DID! I don’t know if it was out of respect for Johnny, a desire to help me in what I was doing, compassion for the nature of the project, or his friendship with [engineer and producer Ross Hogarth]. Most probably all these things—but whatever it was, he gave it His ALL!”

‘Brother Johnny’ is out now.  You can take a a listen to Taylor on the cover or ‘Guess I’ll Go Away” – here.

‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ is No. 1 at weekend box office with a franchise-low $43M in earnings

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”, the third installment in the “Harry Potter” spinoff series, opened to $43 million in North America. According to studio estimates Sunday it was enough to secure the film the top spot on the box-office charts, but it’s also a franchise-low. The first film in the “Fantastic Beasts” series had a $74.4 million debut in 2016, and the second film “The Crimes of Grindelwald,” opened to $62.2 million in 2018. “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” which opened in 4,208 locations in North America, cost approximately $200 million in production.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Ezra Miller and Mikkelsen, who replaced Johnny Depp as Grindelwald.  As did the previous “Fantastic Beasts” films, “Dumbledore” will most likely earn more internationally. Both of the previous films made more than 70% of their global totals from international showings.

Also at the box office, in its second weekend “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” fell to second place with an estimated $30 million in earnings.  Rounding out the rest of the top five: Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s “The Lost City” came in at No. 3, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” took the No. 4 spot, and “Father Stu” starring Mark Wahlberg finished fifth, earning an estimated $8 million in its first five days in theaters.

New David Bowie documentary ‘Moonage Daydream’ set for release

The estate of David Bowie has announced details of a brand new documentary about the music icon entitled “Moonage Daydream.”  The project, directed by Brett Morgan, is billed as “a new feature film, concert documentary and experiential cinematic odyssey” that follows Bowie’s life and musical career.  Moonage Daydream will ‘explore how Bowie worked across several disciplines, not just music and film but also dance, painting, sculpture, video and audio collage, screenwriting, acting, and live theatre; the film will feature Bowie through his own voice and feature 48 musical tracks, mixed from their original stems.’

The film is the first sanctioned by Bowie’s estate.  The title of the documentary comes from the song off the singer’s 1972 album classic album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” which introduced the world to Bowie’s iconic, gender-bending, and groundbreaking stage persona Ziggy Stardust.

Moonage Daydream will premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival next month, ahead of its international release in cinemas and select IMAX theaters.  HBO has secured the North American rights to stream the film in 2023.
