Lifetime Cuts Ties With Abby Lee Miller Of “Dance Moms” After Allegations Of Racist Comments

Lifetime is cutting ties with Dance Moms‘ Abby Lee Miller after accusations of racism surfaced against the reality star. The network will no longer move forward with Millers’s planned new show, Abby’s Virtual Dance Off, a spinoff series to Dance Moms scheduled to premiere later this summer.  In addition, should Dance Moms be renewed for a 9th season, Miller will no longer be part of the series.

Earlier this week, Miller posted a (now-deleted) black square on Instagram for #BlackOutTuesday in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Shortly thereafter, Adriana Smith, who appeared on Season 8 of Dance Moms with her daughter Kamryn, responded with her own Instagram, writing: “I couldn’t think of a more perfect day to address my experience with Abby Lee Miller. Wanna know the truth?” Smith shared a series of posts from her Notes app, writing that at one time, Miller allegedly made a number of racist remarks towards Kamryn. “A statement from her that sticks in my mind to this day during my time on DMS8 is ‘I know you grew up in the HOOD with only a box of 8 crayons, but I grew up in the Country Club with a box of 64 – don’t be stupid,'” Smith recalled, adding: “This to me shows that you think you are better than me and in higher rank and all together superior to ME. This to me shows that you don’t give a f— about me or where I came from.” The mother also alleged that at one point, her daughter had heard Miller say that she was only included on the show for a “sprinkle of color.”.

In a statement, Miller apologized to the family, writing, “I realize that racism can come not just from hate, but also from ignorance. No matter the cause, it is harmful, and it is my fault. While I cannot change the past or remove the harm I have done, I promise to educate myself, learn, grow, and do better. While I hope to one day earn your forgiveness, I recognize that words alone are not enough. I understand it takes time and genuine change.”

Cate Blanchett Says She’s “Fine” After Injuring Her Head With Chainsaw During Quarantine

Cate Blanchett  revealed she cut her head with a chainsaw during quarantine, but is “fine.”

The Oscar winner shared her experience on former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s podcast, A Podcast of One’s Own, May 27. However, Blanchett said she’s totally fine, and the injury was minor. “I had a bit of a chainsaw accident yesterday, which sounds very, very exciting, but it wasn’t,” she explained. “Apart from the little nick to my head, I’m fine.” It is unclear what Blanchett was doing with the chainsaw when she was injured, but it took place at her estate in England where she and her family have been self-isolating amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Surviving Members Of Soundgarden Reunite For Special Release

The surviving members of Soundgarden reunited in the studio last fall for a Record Store Day 2020 EP with Brandi Carlile. Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron were on hand to record new versions of the band’s 1994 smash, “Black Hole Sun”, and 1991’s “Searching With My Good Eye Closed”; they’ll be featured alongside Carlile’s own “A Rooster Says,” which will be released on September 26.

Carlile was also joined by frequent collaborators, twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth. “The twins and I met in the late 90’s in a famous Seattle studio called London Bridge,” explained Carlile. “The guy in the picture with me is Rick Parasher (RIP) and he introduced us. Soundgarden were just gods to us back then. Total pioneers and unreachable to us in every way. We went about making our demos and cleaning the studio when we couldn’t afford the bill never knowing that in November of 2019 we would go back to London Bridge and RECORD TWO SONGS WITH THEM!!

“@chriscornellofficial was as great as a human singer can get and now he’s an angel. Thank you Kim, Ben, and Matt. I’ll never forget this day for as long as I live…. stay tuned!!”

Elvis Costello Returns With New Protest Song Titled ‘No Flag’

Elvis Costello has shared a new song called ‘No Flag.’ The track comes with an animated lyric video, and recorded in February but was released due to the current world unrest.

No Flag is the first new material since Elvis Costello And The Imposters’ 2018 album ‘Look Now’ and was recorded over three days in Helsinki, Finland at Suomenlinnan Studio. “I wanted to go somewhere nobody knew me,” Costello said in a press release. “So, this is ‘The Helsinki Sound’.” Costello also said to “look out for the next installment of this story on July 10,” which suggests more new music is to follow next month.

Music, TV, And Film Production In California Can Resume On June 12th

After months of shutdowns throughout the entertainment industry, California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced guidelines to resume music, film, and television production in California.  Work can begin again on June 12th, as the state transitions into Stage 3 of its coronavirus recovery plan. Stage 3 allows for the re-opening of some “higher-risk workplaces.” Concerts won’t return until stage 4 (and even then, it might not be a typical concert experience) but most recording studios “can” be back after Friday.

Additionally, many of the film and television productions that paused during the pandemic seem likely to resume. However, the guidelines are purposefully vague, and several questions remain.

In a statement, the California Department of Public Health said that the restart would be “subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations.” So for example, filming in Los Angeles would be at the discretion of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, depending on “local epidemiological data.” These health officials are unelected, with an authority that exists in a legal gray area, and those two facts have previously caused tension.

At this time, it’s unclear how the LA Department of Public Health will seek to oversee the local entertainment industry. The guidelines don’t say whether it’s permissible to film a crowd scene, or other TV or movie scenes such as combat, kissing, actors sitting in a crowded car, etc.  There may not be a clear idea of what Stage 3 looks like for a couple of weeks.

Emma Watson Says She’s “Still Learning” After Receiving Backlash For Black Tuesday Post

Actress Emma Watson responded to Twitter backlash her support of the #BlackoutTuesday initiative on her Instagram account. Watson, a UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador and vocal supporter of the Time’s Up movement, joined Tuesday’s blackout across social media and posted three black squares framed by white borders. Each of them was accompanied by the hashtags #blackouttuesday, #theshowmustbepaused, #amplifymelanatedvoices and #amplifyblackvoices.

Some fans responding with comments such as, “Love her lack of energy! go girl give us nothing!” and “Don’t be shy use your platform some more.” By midnight on Tuesday, Watson wrote three more posts reflecting on white privilege and systemic racism. “I was holding off posting until #blackouttuesday ended in the U.K.,” she explained, and included a statement from Watson that read, in part: “White supremacy is one of the systems of hierarchy and dominance, of exploitation and oppression, that is tightly stitched into society. As a white person, I have benefited from this.”

“I’m still learning about the many ways I unconsciously support and uphold a system that is structurally racist,” she added, before promising to share resources for “researching, learning, listening” on her Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Tool Officially Cancels 2020 North American Tour

TOOL has canceled all of their 2020 tour dates, confirming they have no plans to try and reschedule them for the rest of this year or even into 2021. An announcement shared to the band’s Facebook revealed they’ve attempted to determine whether pushing their spring and summer 2020 dates back to the upcoming fall months is possible due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, but it doesn’t seem possible as the live events industry remains on indefinite hiatus for the foreseeable future. TOOL returned to touring last year in support of their 2019 chart-topping studio album, Fear Inoculum.

A statement shared to TOOL’s social media page on reads:

When we played what would be our final show of 2020, March 11 at Portland’s Moda Center, we believed we would be back on the road sometime this Fall. As we worked towards that goal we’ve come to realize that there is absolutely no certainty in re-scheduling dates for this Fall or 2021. State and local ordinances vary widely and no one can predict when high capacity events will safely return.

At the same time that we were working to reschedule this tour, we read your messages. Messages of job losses, illness, emotional and financial pain. We could continue to postpone or reschedule dates for some time into 2021 but ethically, we do not think this is the right course of action. In our opinion, tying up our fans’ money for months, if not a full year, is unfair. With that in mind, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the tour so we can help support the people who have supported us for years.

Fans who purchased tickets through the band or the promoter can expect to receive an email in the coming days confirming the event cancellation and refund details. The band’s last full run of dates took place this past winter prior to the arrival of COVID-19 in North America.

Pearl Jam Release Uncensored Version Of ‘Jeremy’ Video

In recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 5, Pearl Jam released for the first time the version of the “Jeremy” that MTV refused to show.

Jeremy is from Pearl Jam’s 1991 debut Ten, inspired by the death of 16-year-old Jeremy Wade Delle, who shot himself in front of his English class and teacher in Richardson, Texas earlier that same year. Eddie Vedder had read about the tragedy and remembered an incident from seventh grade where a fellow student came into class with a gun and shot a fish tank. Vedder took elements of both and wrote the lyrics to Jeremy.  Pearl Jam’s uncensored video ended with a shirtless Jeremy, having been bullied by his classmates, walking into the room, throws an apple to the teacher, pulls out a gun and sticks it into his mouth.

At the time of the song and video’s release, MTV balked at the sight of Jeremy putting the gun in his mouth, and it was removed, although the final images of the kids remained. The edited video led to speculation as to what happened in the climactic scene — whether Jeremy shot himself, his classmates, or both. The video for Jeremy took home four trophies, including Video of the Year, at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards. Pearl Jam didn’t make another video for six years.

The Ghost Inside Part Ways With Bassist Jim Riley Due To Racist Comments

The Ghost Inside have parted ways with bassist Jim Riley. The bassist was accused of making racist slurs five years ago, and while he issued a statement on Twitter, he has now departed the band.

TGI said in a statement on social media: “The Ghost Inside was born from a scene of forward thinking, understanding and progressiveness. Our music and message has always been one of hope and finding that light at the end of the tunnel. Racism and bigotry of any kind stifle that journey the light. It closes and locks doors that need to be broken open.

“We have decided to part ways with bassist Jim Riley. While we didn’t hear these words spoken directly from his mouth, we did hear mutterings of the incident. At the time we thought this to be just a rumor, but it offended and hurt a community. A community we are meant to bring together. We should’ve spoken up back then and we didn’t, we should’ve dug deeper. We acknowledge that we were silent. We are self educating and growing and learning as individuals. We are here to say that we as a band fully condemn racism and support the black community in the fight against systemic racism.”

The departure of Jim comes one day after The Ghost Inside released their fifth studio album, the first new music from TGI since the devastating bus crash that left two dead and the band seriously injured.
