David Crosby of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, dies at age 81

David Crosby — legendary songwriter, member of The Byrds and co-founder of Crosby Stills Nash and Young — has died at the age of 81.

Variety reports in a statement from Crobsy’s wife, Jan Dance: “It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us. His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and try to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers.”

Crosby first made rock history after joining bandmates Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, and Michael Clarke in The Byrds in 1964, contributing to five albums over three years before parting ways with The Byrds in 1967. In 1968. Crosby formed Crosby Stills and Nash with Buffalo Springfield’s Stephen Stills and The Hollies’ Graham Nash. The lineup won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1969, the same year that Neil Young joined them for live appearances, at which point the quartet was billed as ‘Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Crosby was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, as a member of the Byrds (1991) and Crosby, Stills & Nash (1997). He is survived by his wife Jan Dance, their son Django, son James Raymond, and two daughters, Erika and Donovan, from previous relationships.

Jane’s Addiction announce 2023 U.S. tour dates

Jane’s Addiction have announced a series of U.S. tour dates this spring, in advance of their performances at three Lollapalooza festivals in South America.  The band will hit the road beginning March 4th in Bakersfield, California, and wrap up the five-show stint with a March 12th gig in Reno, Nevada.  They’ll then play Lollapalooza Argentina (March 18th), Lollapalooza Chile (March 19th), and Lollapalooza Brazil (March 25th).

Jane’s Addiction welcomed back original bassist Eric Avery for their tour with the Smashing Pumpkins last year. Guitarist Dave Navarro had been dealing with an ongoing battle with long COVID which kept him off the road, with Queens of the Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwen filling in on guitar for that tour.  As of now, it is unclear whether Navarro will be back on stage for the March shows.

Tickets for the U.S. shows go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, January 20th via Ticketmaster.

Lisa Marie Presley to be honored with public memorial at Graceland

Lisa Marie Presley will be honored with a public service at her father Elvis Presley’s Graceland home. Lisa Marie died Thursday after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital for a possible cardiac arrest. She was 54.  Almost a week before her death, Lisa Marie spent time at Graceland celebrating what would have been Elvis’ 88th birthday.

A representative for Presley’s daughter Riley Keough said in a statement: “Riley, Harper, Finley, and Priscilla are grateful for the support, well-wishes, and outpouring of love honoring their beloved Lisa Marie. A public memorial service has been arranged on the front lawn of Graceland at 9:00 am on Sunday, January 22 in Memphis. Please visit [the official Graceland website] for more information.””

Lisa Marie is survived by her mother, Priscilla Presley, 77; and her three daughters, Riley, 33, and twins Finley and Harper Lockwood, 14. Lisa Marie was preceded in death by her son Benjamin Keough, who died by suicide at age 27 in 2020. According to Riley’s representative, Lisa Marie’s final resting place will be at Graceland next to her son Benjamin.  Lisa Marie will join her son at the Meditation Garden, which is also the final resting place of Elvis, Elvis’ mother Gladys Presley, Elvis’ father Vernon Presley and Elvis’ grandmother Minnie Mae Presley.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that all who wish to send something to donate to The Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit which offers support to organizations focusing on the arts, education and children’s programs in the Memphis and Whitehaven area.

Madonna announces 40th anniversary ‘Celebration Tour’

Madonna plans to celebrate her 40th anniversary with the announcement of the Celebration Tour, her first retrospective concert tour. Said Madonna: “I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for.” The Celebration Tour is Madonna’s first since her 2019-2020 run of shows in support of her album Madame X.  The tour was hampered by Madonna’s back injury that forced several cancellations, and their set lists were dominated by 11 or 12 songs nightly from the album and only a handful of tracks from her earlier classic releases.

The Celebration Tour announcement came via a nearly five-minute video shared to Madonna’s social accounts, where she is seen paying tribute to her 1991 ‘Blond Ambition’ World Tour documentary Truth or Dare. The announcement comes at the end of the video, which features Amy Schumer, Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Diplo, Kate Berlant, Eric Andre, Bob the Drag Queen, Larry Owens and Meg Stalter around a table playing the game ‘Truth or Dare.’

Tickets go on sale on Friday (Jan. 20) and Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. local time; click here for a complete list of dates and ticketing options.

Listen to Peter Gabriel’s new song “Panopticom”

Peter Gabriel has released “Panopticom,” the lead track from i/o, his first album of original material since 2002. The song features contributions from familiar names such as bassist Tony Levin, drummer Manu Katché, and guitarist David Rhodes, as well as “electronics” from Brian Eno and backing vocals from the Breath’s Ríoghnach Connolly. No release date for i/o has been confirmed, but Gabriel says “the lunar phases will guide the release plan in 2023, with a new song revealed each full moon.” Each will be accompanied by its own artwork, with Panopticom featuring a cover image by David Spriggs.

In a press release, Gabriel said about “Panopticom”: The first song is based on an idea I have been working on to initiate the creation of an infinitely expandable accessible data globe: the Panopticom. We are beginning to connect a like-minded group of people who might be able to bring this to life, to allow the world to see itself better and understand more of what’s really going on.  Gabriel said the song’s name mirrors that of an idea he’s been working on “to initiate the creation of an infinitely expandable accessible data globe. We are beginning to connect a like-minded group of people who might be able to bring this to life — to allow the world to see itself better and understand more of what’s really going on.”

Gabriel will begin his first European tour in nine years on May 18 in Krakow, with North American stops to be announced for late summer and fall.

Take a listen to ‘Panopticom (Bright Side Mix)’ here.
