Ringo Starr to release first country album in 50 years, ‘Look Up’

Ringo Starr will release his next project, a country album titled ‘Look Up’, due out January 10, 2025.

Look Up, produced and co-written by T Bone Burnett, features 11 original songs and is Starr’s first new LP since 2019 — and his first country record in more than 50 years. Starr sang and played drums on all the songs and co-wrote the album’s closing track, “Thankful,” featuring Alison Krauss. Burnett enlisted some of Nashville’s best talent for the record, including Billy Strings, Larkin Poe, Lucius, and Molly Tuttle.

Ringo said of the album: “I’ve always loved country music. And when I asked T Bone to write me a song, I didn’t even think at the time that it would be a country song – but of course it was, and it was so beautiful. I had been making EPs at the time and so I thought we would do a country EP -but when he brought me nine songs I knew we had to make an album! And I am so glad we did. I want to thank and send Peace & Love, to T Bone and all the great musicians who helped make this record. It was a joy making it and I hope it is a joy to listen to.”

Burnett adds: “I have loved Ringo Starr and his playing and his singing and his aesthetic for as long as I can (or care to) remember. He changed the way every drummer after him played, with his inventive approach to the instrument. And, he has always sung killer rockabilly, as well as being a heartbreaking ballad singer. To get to make this music with him was something like the realization of a 60-year dream I’ve been living. None of the work that I have done throughout a long life in music would have happened if not for him and his band. Among other things, this album is a way I can say thank you for all he has given me and us.”

Starr will bring this new music to Nashville when he headlines the famed Ryman Auditorium on January 14-15, 2025. The first track from Look Up, titled “Time On My Hands” is out now; take a listen: HERE.

See the trailer for Amazon’s ‘Cruel Intentions’ reboot series premiering Nov. 21st

Prime Video‘s reboot of Cruel Intentions will premiere with all eight episodes on Thursday, Nov. 21, with the streaming service also releasing the first trailer for the series.

Cruel Intentions reimagines the 1999 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair. Both are modern adaptations of the 18th-century novel ‘Dangerous Liaisons.’

The Amazon reboot “follows the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything, fraternities and sororities are the gold standard, and two ruthless stepsiblings, Caroline Merteuil (First Kill’s Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (One Night’s Zac Burgess), will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Greek Life system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputation – even if that means seducing Annie Grover (the Gossip Girl reboot’s Savannah Lee Smith), the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Hearts will be broken, loyalties will be tested, and secrets will be revealed in this modern-day royal court that is Manchester College.”

The cast includes Sarah Catherine Hook as Caroline, Zac Burgess as Lucien, Savannah Lee Smith as Annie, and Sara Silva as Cece Carroway, with John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas and Brooke Lena Johnson also starting.

Craig Melvin to replace Hoda Kotb as co-anchor of NBC’s ‘Today’ show

NBC News anchor and broadcast journalist Craig Melvin will replace Hoda Kotb as co-anchor of NBC’s Today show, taking over for Kotb following her departure on Jan. 10. Melvin, 45, will co-anchor the program alongside Savannah Guthrie.

Today’s senior vice president, Libby Leist, in a statement: “He’s been an integral and beloved part of our family. From breaking news coverage in the field, to presidential interviews, to multiple Olympics and Super Bowls, Craig’s shown he has the talent and the range to cover all that we do here at Today. And he does it without ever losing that Southern charm.”

The 14-year NBC veteran said after the on-air announcement: “I am beyond excited and grateful. I’ve had a lot of conversations yesterday with a lot of people who mean a lot to me. I want to thank NBC and the folks who deemed me worthy, but I’ve got to start by thanking the man upstairs, the Lord above and his son, Jesus. I’ve enjoyed just a lifetime of blessings and this is the latest in a long line of blessings.”

Melvin has co-anchored the weekend edition of Today and currently co-hosts the third hour of the Today show, in addition to news-anchoring earlier broadcasts of the show.  He will co-host the Today show with Guthrie for the 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. hours (beginning Jan. 13) and will remain a co-host during the third hour. Today’s fourth hour, which is currently co-hosted by Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, will be rebranded as ‘Today with Jenna & Friends’ beginning Jan. 13.   The show will welcome a rotating cast of personalities to helm the show with Bush Hager until a permanent cohost is found.

Kotb announced she was leaving the Today Show in September, releasing a statement confirming that she’d step down from the show to spend more time with her family: “as I write this, my heart is all over the map,” she wrote in a letter to the show’s staff. “I know I’m making the right decision, but it’s a painful one. And you all are the reason why. They say two things can be right at the same time, and I’m feeling that so deeply right now. I love you and it’s time for me to leave the show.”

Dave Coulier reveals Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis

Comedian and actor Dave Coulier announced he has been diagnosed with Stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a blood cancer that begins in the lymphatic system. The Full House star, 65, told People in an interview published on Wednesday, November 13, that he received his diagnosis in October after an upper respiratory infection resulted in severe swelling of his lymph nodes.

Coulier told NBC’s Today show that he later noticed lump in his groin about the size of a golf ball: “It swelled up immediately. I thought, ‘Wow, I’m either really sick, or my body’s really reacting to something.  Three days later, my doctors called me back and they said, ‘We wish we had better news for you, but you have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and it’s called B cell and it’s very aggressive.’ I went from, I got a little bit of a head cold to I have cancer, and it was pretty overwhelming. This has been a really fast roller coaster ride of a journey.”

Doctors told Coulier the his curability rate is over 90%, since the cancer hasn’t spread to his bone marrow; Coulier started chemotherapy about two weeks after the diagnosis, and shaved his head as a preemptive measure. The actor said that he’s had “three surgeries” and if his treatment goes as planned, he should be in “total remission” by the time he completes chemo in February 2025.
