Grammy Award-Winning rapper Coolio dies at age 59

Coolio’s longtime manager, Jarez Posey, has confirmed to TMZ and Rolling Stone that the rapper has died at age 59. The Grammy Award winner (born Artis Leon Ivey Jr.) was visiting a friend on Wednesday, September 28, when he suddenly passed away.

Posey revealed to TMZ that Coolio’s friend grew concerned when the rapper was indisposed for an extended period of time and didn’t respond to his name being called, when he eventually went and found Coolio unresponsive. An ambulance was called and EMTs pronounced the rapper dead on the scene. Posey said the paramedics suspect Coolio went into cardiac arrest, though an official cause of death has yet to be determined.

Coolio, perhaps best known for his 1995 Grammy-Award winning single “Gangsta’s Paradise,” released eight solo studio albums between 1994 and 2009, and also appeared on the big screen in 1997’s Batman & Robin opposite George Clooney, Get Over It with Kirsten Dunst in 2001, and Ben Affleck‘s 2003 Daredevil movie. He also made memorable appearances on television shows including Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Nanny, Charmed and Teachers.

Coolio was married to Josefa Salinas from 1996 to 2000. They shared four kids, daughters Artisha, Brandi, Jackie and son Artis, who co-starred with him on the 2008 reality series Coolio’s Rules.

Paramore shares the video for the title track off their upcoming album “This Is Why”

Paramore have released their new song “This Is Why,” the title track from their new album due out February 10th. “This Is Why” was recorded in Los Angeles with Carlos de la Garza, who worked with Paramore on their self-titled album, and 2017’s After Laughter.

Of the new song, Paramore’s Hayley Williams said in a statement: “’This Is Why’ was the very last song we wrote for the album. To be honest, I was so tired of writing lyrics but [guitarist] Taylor [York] convinced [drummer] Zac [Farro] and I both that we should work on this last idea. What came out of it was the title track for the whole album. It summarizes the plethora of ridiculous emotions, the rollercoaster of being alive in 2022, having survived even just the last three or four years. You’d think after a global pandemic of fucking biblical proportions and the impending doom of a dying planet, that humans would have found it deep within themselves to be kinder or more empathetic or something.”

Check out the video for the new song, directed by Turnstile’s Brendan Yates and filmed in Malibu, at the link – here.

Metallica have announced that they will be leading the lineup for a Tribute Concert honoring Megaforce Records owner and founder Jonny Zazula and his wife Marsha, with a special show in Florida. Jonny died in February 2022 from complications of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIPD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and osteopenia. Marsha passed away from cancer in January 2021.

The special concert will take place at the Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, on, November 6th. A portion of the proceeds from this show will be donated in Jonny and Marsha’s name to MusiCares, a safety net supporting the health and welfare of the music community offering preventive, emergency, and recovery programs to musicians and industry professionals. Additionally, All Within My Hands will be supporting ‘Feeding South Florida’ with a donation following the show.

Metallica had this to say of the event:  “We’re excited to add one more night to the tour calendar this year with a special show . This night will be extra-special as we’ll be celebrating the life, legacy and achievements of Jonny and Marsha Zazula. Jonny gave us our first break in New York, released our first albums on his Megaforce Records label, and put us out on the road for our first real tour. With Marsha by his side, Jonny was a mentor, a manager, a label head, and a father figure to us all…. we would not be where we are today without the two of them. Sadly, we recently lost both Jonny and Marsha, just a little more than a year apart. We’ll be cooking up a special setlist for you full of songs from our days with Jonny and Marsha at Megaforce. Our main touring partner from that time, Raven, will be joining us to add to the celebration and bring back the memories. Head out to Hard Rock Live and celebrate two heavy metal pioneers and champions with us!”

Tickets for the show will be available starting on Friday, September 30th at 10 am EDT. Fifth Member fan club members will have early access beginning Wednesday, September 28th. For more information head to Metallica.com.

Nancy Wilson releases Taylor Hawkins tribute song “Amigo Amiga”

Heart co-founder Nancy Wilson has released “Amigo Amiga” the tribute song she wrote for her friend, the late Taylor Hawkins, a few days after his passing. Hawkins was found dead in his Bogota, Colombia hotel room on March 25th while the Foo Fighters were on tour in South America.

The song and new lyric video, featuring Nancy, are available now, with all proceeds from the release of the single benefiting the Recording Academy’s MusiCares.  Wilson explains of the song: “The night we heard about losing Taylor I started writing the song. I heard myself in tears saying ‘too soon too soon’ which became a refrain in the song. I spent quite a few sleepless nights trying to express it all. He was a wonderful friend and we always had funny pet names for each other like Amigo and Amiga as well as Luv and Dahling. I sang on his great solo album Get the Money at his home studio and later he returned the favor and played drums on my solo album…t is such a painful loss — but it also feels like Taylor has galvanized and re-energized Rock and Roll with so many of his musician friends and fans coming together — it’s a new renaissance Taylor and the Foo family have gifted us all.”

Take a look at the lyric video for “Amigo Amiga” – here.  At the request of the Foo Fighters, Wilson performed the track at the tribute concert for Hawkins at The Forum in Inglewood, CA.

Dead & Company announce their final tour in 2023

Dead & Company has shared that they will be embarking on their final tour in 2023, with next summer’s trek to be their final tour after eight years together. The band wrote on social media: “As we put the finishing touches on booking venues, and understanding that word travels fast, we wanted to be the first to let you know that Dead & Company will be hitting the road next summer for what will be our final tour. Stay tuned for a full list of dates for what will surely be an exciting, celebratory, and heartfelt last run of shows.” Further details will be shared as they become available.

Drummer Bill Kreutzmann shared his thoughts about the end on social media: “The Grateful Dead always felt timeless from our very beginnings at the acid tests where ‘time’ did some funny things so we left it behind altogether. This music will always exist, always evolve, always be the soundtrack of our ever changing lives. But the form changes. It always has, from when we invited Mickey to join the band to the many shapes and forms it took after [frontman] Jerry [Garcia] left us. And so it’s almost time for another change. I have loved this chapter with Dead & Company, as we got to explore the music with some new interpreters and different antennas, but we always knew it was just a chapter. The Music never stops. I hope you’ll join us for one final Dead & Company tour next summer and after that… as always… I’m really excited about what comes next. Thank you all for being with us on this journey. It’s far from over so keep those seat belts on because we’ve got some wild nights ahead.”

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti.  The band has completed six tours since its formation, playing to 3.4 million fans, and becoming a record-breaking stadium act. The band has grossed $255.5 million and sold 2.8 million tickets across 149 reported shows.
