Bruce Springsteen teams up with Barack Obama for Spotify podcast ‘Renegades’

Former President Barak Obama and Bruce Springsteen have teamed up for a new eight-episode podcast on Spotify titled Renegades: Born in the USA. Obama and Springsteen will sit down to discuss race, fatherhood, marriage and the future of the United States.

Obama asks in the introduction of the first episode: “How did we get here? How could we find our way back to a more unifying American story? That topic came to dominate so many of my conversations last year – with Michelle, with my daughters and with friends. And one of the friends just happened to be Mr. Bruce Springsteen. On the surface, Bruce and I don’t have a lot in common. But over the years, what we’ve found is that we’ve got a shared sensibility. About work, about family and about America. In our own ways, Bruce and I have been on parallel journeys trying to understand this country that’s given us both so much. Trying to chronicle the stories of its people. Looking for a way to connect our own individual searches for meaning in truth and community within the larger story of America.”

Renegades marks the second podcast launched through Spotify as part of a deal Obama and his wife Michelle Obama announced in 2019. The Obama’s production company Higher Ground, partnered with Spotify to produce exclusive podcasts. Higher Ground is also partnering with Netflix on the release of Micheal Keaton’s new 9/11-themed film, Worth.

James Franco reaches settlement with former students sexual misconduct case

Two women who accused James Franco of sexual misconduct at his defunct film school have dropped their charges in light of a new settlement agreement.

In 2019, Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal filed a class action lawsuit against the actor and his Studio 4 school. The acting and film school was open from 2014 to 2017, during which time the accusers said Franco and his fellow teachers “engaged in widespread inappropriate and sexually charged behavior towards female students by sexualizing their power as a teacher and an employer by dangling the opportunity for roles in their projects.”

Over a year later, the two sides have reached a settlement agreement. The financial terms of the agreement are not yet public, though they must be submitted for court approval by March 15th. The agreement finds Tither-Kaplan and Gaal agreeing to drop their suit against Franco; his partners, Vince Jolivette and Jay Davis; and his Rabbit Bandini production company.

Allegations of Franco’s misconduct began to surface at the height of the #MeToo movement in 2018 after he won the Golden Globe for his role as Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist. Since then, Franco has kept a low profile, sticking to self-directed projects like Zeroville or minor voice roles in Arctic Dogs

‘The Muppet Show’ to air with a content disclaimer warning on Disney+

Jim Henson’s classic series “The Muppet Show” began streaming on Disney+ on Friday, but now will come prefaced with an offensive content disclaimer, saying, “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversations to create a more inclusive future together.”

The show, which ran for five seasons between 1976 and 1981, features the new content warning on 18 episodes, including those guest-hosted by Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Debbie Harry and Marty Feldman, among others.

Each episode bears the 12-second disclaimer for a different reason; Cash’s appearance had him singing in front of a Confederate flag, and other episodes had negative depictions of Native Americans, Middle Easterners and people from other cultures. Two episodes from the final season, featuring guest stars Brooke Shields and staff writer Chris Langham, are left out entirely.
